"End of the unilateralism and mutual recognition"
ProcessusdePaix.com: According to the most recent events, which could be, in your opinion, the conditions for the restarting of a peace process in the Near East ?
Edith Mastenbroek, Députée européenne: According to me, one of the conditions for restarting the peace process in the Near East has to be the end of the unilateralism. Both parties should acknowledge that unilateralism has been neither in the interest of the region nor of the citizens.
Mutual recognition is a second condition. Not only should Palestine recognize Israel, but also, and this has been a big mistake during the Oslo peace talks, Israel should recognize the right of existence of the Palestine state.
On the refugee question : Both parties should dare to say that there can be a solution for the refugee problem. This would entail, the Palestines making a concession by accepting that not all the refugees from 1948 can go back to Israel; This is simply impossible in practice.
